Ok, I have graduated High School and have finally moved on to college. Along with this, I obviously need a portable computer to bring with me and work on outside of my room. I can't stand working at home and would rather work in the coffee shops around the city. So, I have put my sights on a MacBook. Not a pro because they're just too expensive for me. Currently I have 17'' iMac Core Duo. The only difference between this and a MacBook is the video card (which really is a plus) and the hdd space (which really isn't a plus because I am only using about 10 gb so far).

So my thoughts are:

Sell the iMac and get a high qualiy MacBook.

or

Keep the iMac and get a lower quality MacBook.

I do a little Photoshop work, nothing special. I am majoring (as of now) in graphic design so there will be some more Photoshop work in the future. Once I get a MacBook I know I'll rarely be around to work on the iMac. But it would be nice to have a second Mac around and one powerful enough to handle more difficult tasks.

Thoughts, opinions?

Do u need the iMac for home use? If you don't then you can sell it and buy a new Macbook.

why not a MacBook Pro? Kill 2 birds with one stone, portability, and power.

I don't have the money for one. I think macofalltrades offers about $700 for my current system (rip off) and I don't have enough to make a jump to $1700 (student price) not including applecare which would, after it's all said and done, set me up at nearly $2000.

I don't really need or want anything for home use. I'm never here anyways.

If it were me, I would keep the iMac and get the lower macbook. If your macbook breaks or something happens and you dont have a computer, thats not a good thing. Im assuming you start school in August, you might hold off on the macbook for a little while and see if you can save up some money. Then you could get a good macbook and still keep the iMac.

Well, I just went to look at the MacBook and I'm totally unimpressed. It feels more like a toy than a computer. Not to mention the white ones are hideous and the black ones are $200 more because they're black and have 20gb more than the white ones. I'm going with a MacBook Pro. They look amazing, feel solid and are just more powerful. Now it's a money question.

No reason why you can't still save some money and pick up a powerbook.

lower quality MacBook.
I don't think there is just a thing... :p

Personally, I would prefer to have both imac & MB. From what I've read, there is very little performance difference between the 1.83 and 2.0. Ram is most important...

I was faced toward a similar decision and here is what I decided:

My top-of-the-line (at it's time) iMac to be my powerhouse,
and My bottom-of-the-line MacBook to be my Web/Word/iChat/etc. PC.

I can still run stuff like PS on the 1.83GHz for light work, but if I want to do some heavy Shake or FCP work, I go to my iMac.

Hope this helps! :)

Mmm...

Why can't I just have a nice 2 grand sitting infront of me with nothing to do but be spent on something?
