Hi folks,

I am considering buying an iPad but not sure if it has apps with SSH terminal capabilities.

I am looking for an app with the same capabilities as Mac OS X "Shell" application that features BSD Unix-like environment. Are there any iPad applications like that? I'm a developer who frequently uses Shell application on my mac laptop and I think having one on an iPad would be kind of cool :)

Now, I did search the app store and there does appear to be SSH application, but I don't know if it has the capabilities which I have just described I am looking for.

Does anybody know?

Thanks,
Victor.

An ssh client connects to another machine so the capabilities are limited to what's available on the remote machine. Thus, you won't get Unix like commands to execute on your iPad.

However, if you're looking for a bash (csh/tcsh) shell for iOS, you're probably out of luck. I'm pretty sure such an app would contravene the EULA clause pertaining to the interpretation of code (or perhaps the fact that it has access to an otherwise restricted filesystem).

The iPad is NOT a small laptop, netbook or anything of the like, it IS however a larger iPhone. So the idea is that your access is controlled to ensure that you don't break things without knowing what you are doing. If you are a developer (of iOS apps), then you would develop your apps in XCode and test on simulator and eventually on the device through XCode and have complete access to your code/program..

Thank you guys for your comments and dissolving my misconceptions about iPad being a small laptop. I was hoping that there would be some Unix-like emulators with no actual access to iPad filesystem, but it seems like I'm out of luck. Thank you for bringing me back to reality :)

Victor.
