I just bought a used macbook pro with a 500gb ssd, but when I go to about this mac -> storage, it indicates that I only have 250gb on the drive. Same is true in disk utility.

Does this have a bootcamp partition? It shows 500GB and the model number for it shows it to be a 500GB. So it looks to me like a partition is in place???

Wouldn't that show up in disk utility under Macintosh HD? Sorry, I am just unsure how I would check that.

When I open up bootcamp assistant, it seems to only give me options to setup a bootcamp partition, not to remove one.

Lisa - my thoughts also about another partition, but why would Disk Utility not list the other partition, unless this is unique to Bootcamp, which I've never used. The OP can look in System Preferences -> Startup Disk to see if there is another boot option, as shown below (from the web & not my computer). Dave :)

When I open startup disk, only Macintosh HD is there. Nothing else.

Hi again - well, I'm baffled - go to Apple (left upper corner) -> About This Mac -> System Report.... - highlight 'Storage' in the left column, then screen capture the same pic as below from my MBPro (256 SSD) - probably will not add much more than you've already posted. I'm not sure if you decided to reformat the drive if the storage will be reported correctly? Might want to wait for a few other members to 'chime in' - good luck. Dave :)

It appears you have unformatted space on that SSD. I'm guessing that someone either had another partition on the drive and removed it instead of merging it back. It may have been a Boot Camp partition that failed and was removed with Disk Utility instead of the Boot Camp Assistant.

Go to your Apple Menu (top left) and select "About This Mac". Then click on "System Report". Under "Hardware", click on "Storage". That will give you a positive readout of exactly which SSD you have and how large.

If the space is unformatted as I suspect, you'll need to backup your data first and then erase the SSD and format it as one partition. Then, reinstall OS X. That's the only way you will be able to reclaim that space.

You will most likely have to do a system recovery. Download the Mac OS X/MacOS/macOS version from the Mac App Store and create a bootable USB, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372. The boot from the USB and go into Disk Utility to Erase and Partition the drive.

This does look like a cloning issue. Possibly as chscag said - a bootcamp partition that did not clone or get merged back into the OS partition.

Agree with Bob. If a BootCamp partition had been set up, and was removed incorrectly, by Disk Utility etc instead of BootCamp, this is precisely what happens. The partition is deleted but the free space is still tied up and not restored. What does Disk Utility > Partition say about the drive?
