Spotlight in OS 10.5.8

Your Mac's Specs
iBoook G4 OS 10.5.8
Running 10.5.8 on a PPC iBook. Spotlight works intermittently (irregularly irregular) and when it does not, neither does the Find function. I tried the suggested add and delete of HD in Privacy Prefs, but this had no effect. Any further suggestions appreciated.

Recently ran DiskUtility, TechTool, and Maintenance to verify and repair permissions—also without effect. Also deleted 'com.apple.launchServices.plist" as suggest to no effect. Same with "/Users/NAME/Lib/Prefs" trashed. Why would Spotlight work sometimes and irregularly so; what controls this?
