Spotlight disappeared and other issues

Hey guys would love some help here on this, started up the macbook today and spotlight seems to have disappeared, and as well as that i cant copy or paste or drag and drop items. Not sure whats going on, i haven't updated or installed anything recently.
Tried repair permissions and a reboot but no joy
Anyone have any ideas on this

That sounds bad. Do you have a Time Machine backup? If you do, you can boot your Mac from your install DVD and it will restore your computer from Time Machine.

Unfortunately no time machine backup. logged in as root user and everything is working fine. I set up a new account also but the problems are still present in the new account. Looks like it might have to be a reinstall of the os
