I just bought a new iMac last week and got a Belkin FireWire 800/400 9 pin to 4 pin Cable. My sony Handycam DCR-TRV33 has a 4 pin port, so this connection should work, but when I connect the camera and put it into vcr mode, nothing happens on the computer. It doesn't seem to recognize the camera. I'm really hoping to use iMovie to edit some videos for a project I have to do for school. I looked at the list of compatible cameras for iMovie 2011 and mine wasn't listed there, but I am really hoping to not have to buy a new camera if I don't need to. Does anyone have any advice on how to get my video onto the iMac? Thank you so much for your help.

This is just something I read somewhere else, but is your AC adapter plugged in?
If not, you should try it.

As an alternate, troubleshooting step, have you tried using USB to get the files and then import to iMovie?

Yeah, I hooked up the usb and it still doesn't recognize the camera. At this rate I might have to just buy a new camera because my project is due soon.

I spent a few hours playing around with it and finally got the firewire cable working. Thank you to everyone who took the time to give me advice. I needed to use it to edit a youtube show for my friends. Here's a link to it if you want to check it out. Thanks again!

Hi gmen12,

I've just registered on this site having seen this thread. I've sent you a PM, but it would be great if you would please post the details on how you got the Firewire cable to finally work and transfer footage to iMac.

I also have a Sony TRV-33e and was about to buy my first iMac. I waited until yesterday hoping for a spec bump rather than a re-design. I was a little peturbed to see Apple have removed the Firewire port and the Superdive now so I wondered about getting a 2011 refurb model.

The thing is I don't want to waste my time if even the 2011 model has trouble recognising the Sony camcorder over firewire cable.

With Thanks

I'm having the exact same issue. How did you get it working?

Thanks
