I have several pieces of frequently-used software that are not being ported over to Sequoia. They run fine in the M1 Sonoma environment. Considering the new M4 mini, but not if it con't somehow get a Sequoia lobotomy with a following Sonoma installation. What are the possibilities?

For a long time, on Macs, you can't go back to an older version of the OS than what it came with. Not sure if that's changed with Apple Silicon.

Since Sonoma and Sequoia are one version apart, what application is not going to work with Sequoia? Unlike other version upgrades where we lost 32-bit support or other things, this shouldn't require any specific porting go from Sonoma to Sequoia.

Finale music composition and scoring software. They offered a Dorico cross grade for a good price, but the learning curve will be rather steep. I've been using Finale for over 25 years and know it like the back of my hand.

Thank you for the info. So it looks like that particular software is being sunset and folks are being asked to transition to another software that will be supported.

What I will say is that if that app works on Sonoma, it will work on Sequoia. You are probably looking at their FAQ which states:

What happens when Apple releases macOS 15 (Sequoia) later this year?

Apple will relase macOS 15 (Sequoia) on Monday, September 16, 2024.

Finale will not be considered compatible with Sequoia, and any compatibility issues that may arise between Finale and Sequoia will not be fixed.

We recommend Mac users relying on Finale do not upgrade their OS to Sequoia and check their System Settings to disable automatic macOS updates

And they have to say that since they are not actively developing or maintaining that application. Now the next version of macOS beyond Sequoia might introduce something that might break this software, but that's a bridge you'll have to cross when you get there.

Thanks. I think I'll give it a try, and keep my M1 mini on Sonoma with the Finale software, and dig into learning Dorico. One more project. I'm also toying with the idea of replacing my monitor with a Meta Quest 3 VR headset to kind of get the virtual display like the Vision Pro without the large price tag. There's no end to the fun!

Hasn't Finale been discontinued? Perhaps before Mac's OS upgrade to Sequoia?

If so, can we reasonably expect it to keep working after that?

I think thats the ideal course of action. Learning the successor while still having the previous app is the best way of transitioning slowly. There really is no rush to upgrade to Sequoia either. Apple fully supports previous macOS for 3 years so you can upgrade when you feel ready and with a little luck both apps will continue to work anyway.
I had a similar issue with Hider 2 an app that was "sundowned" by the developer in 2019 and it continued to work on subsequent macOS right up until this year.
