Hello, i'm wondering if anyone knows how to make it so that my ibook is not wide open on my windows (or mac) network. Right now, its just a computer listed in the computers near me, does anyone know how to make it so that the computer requires authentication? like a user name and password before access is granted? thanks in advance

if youre running OS 10.3, its very simple.

System Preferences >> File Vault

System Preferences >> Sharing : turn off everything you need and check your firewall settings

System Preferences >> Security : Disable automatic login. (I'm not sure if this affects remote login, but my iBook has always requred username and password to connect smb-shares)

I wouldn't use File Vault as first and only defense.

Thanks for the replys, i don't really want to encrypt everything if its not required. the other settings are set, so i guess i should just turn on and off windows sharing?
