After a few weeks vacation I now find it takes very long to empty " securely" the trash . I've always used "securely " . Everything else is running well.

I guess you have a lot of stuff to empty from the Trash which can take a long time. And not normally necessary to even use the Security Erase, but that depends on a lot of things. Your choice. ;)

After you empty the trash is there anything left in it? And how much unused space is on your Mac? You should have 20% empty at least. If not everything may slow down.:)

Hey Guys , thx for quick response - a few more notes.
Drive is 1 TB and 20% occupied.Trash is empty.
Always use 'secure" and it would take no time at all. ( minutes).
Yesterday , had 6 (2 pages) pdf's and a "Password Manager app" in trash , the window indicated approx. 2700 items .... and it was deleting items 1 every 2,3 seconds .... walked away after 40 minutes. Returned after approx. 1 hr. and it was empty.
Appreciate your help.

Glad to hear it's fixed, but that's sure a lot of seemingly bloated surplus stuff to have to remove from such a utility, and not sure why you even need to use secure erase. Certainly not necessary for deleting any normal app.

The Password manager may have been the issue. I would advise using App Trap it is a small utility that will remove associated files when you trash an application. Generally just putting an application in the trash is not a good idea. Unless you use something like CleanMyMac to empty trash thus removing associated files settings, preferences etc, etc.

Apps are made up of hundreds or thousands of small files, so yes, that was the issue.

Take the tinfoil hat off and use Secure Empty Trash when it is warranted, and regular empty trash when it isn't.

Hear, hear chas-m;D
I always knew there were a lot of associated files for some apps, obviously some more than others but it wasn't until I deleted an old version of Microsoft Excel using CMM 2 some time ago that I noted just how many, 30+ separate files and folders. Some only a few Kb but who wants them hanging around when the app is gone, especially I you intend to install a newer version.
