How do I speed up my MacBook?

My MacBook is from end 2009. I'm running OS X Yosemite 10.10, processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 duo, memory 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, videoNVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB.
I ran MacKeeper to clean up my Macbook. As an external backup drive I use a 1 Tb Intense drive.

Thanks for the info. There are two things I see to help speed up your MacBook:

- upgrade the ram (2gig just isn't enough)
- GET RID OF MACKEEPER!!!! I cannot say this strongly enough. BIG BIG mistake installing & using MacKeeper!!!!!!

NO to the AntiVirus, you don't need any and the only "cleanup" tool we recommend here is Onyx which you can get for free from the developer here. I'm not sure if it's easy to get rid of MacKeeper, I think it gets embedded pretty well into the OS, which is where the slowdowns come from, so you may have to search for uninstall instructions for it.

I fully agree on Onyx, less on AV.
Maybe Sophos AV is a good and free choice. Just today I read about new threats related to Yosemite OS. I'm using Sophos since long time and I don't have any issue.

There are no viruses for OS X at this time. There are no known vectors by which a virus can enter OS X at this time. Therefore, no A/V program can possibly be doing anything to protect OS X. All A/V software does is take up cycles protecting against Windows viruses, which don't infect OS X. They are basically useless.
