My imac will not come out of a sleep mode unless I restart from the back button . Would anyone know the procedure to find out why and correct the setting for this?

My iMac only wakes from sleep if I press a key on the keyboard and not by just moving the mouse. It could be that you are doing both with no effect but just thought I'd mention it. :bomb:

Are you using the original Apple keyboard ?

Go to System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Settings and make sure that the box is checked to allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer

I would try resetting your PRAM. You should most certainly not have to use the rear power button to 'wake' your computer. I too use the wireless KB and mouse on my iMac and either clicking the mouse botton, or pressing any key on the computer will bring the computer out of sleep. If the PRAM reset does not do the trick, I would suggest giving AppleCare a call as you may have more serious issues. You may also want to 'reset' your mouse and keyboard by truning them and then back on. Do this by moving the switch on the back of the KB and by moving the slider in front of the laser on the mouse. I notice sometimes that my computer will fail to recognize my bluetooth equipment on occasion, and turning them off and then back will often help the iMac to 'find' them again.

I did have that set to put hard drive to sleep when possible, I think that was it??? But if it's sleeping shouldn't it just power up automatically, with out rebooting from the back? It looks as though it wants to start up ,the screen gets a dark purplish color but doesn't.

Having the HDD go to sleep should not cause this problem. You are correct in assuming that your computer should just 'wake-up' without having to reboot.

OnDeckTech actually gets credit for first suggesting that, but yes. :p Try resetting the pram. If that doesn't solve the problem you will have reached the limit of my Mac knowledge and you and I will both have to wait for someone more knowledgable to come along and chime in. ;)
