I have a couple of questions about the sleep mode.

Firstly, sometimes when I return to the iMac after I've set it to sleep it's turned off and shut down. Least I think it's shut down, it doesn't respond to anything and then when I press the power button for a while it starts up again and comes up with the startup screen. It's only happened a few times and I haven't noticed any pattern, no lights going off and coming back on or anything like that.

Secondly, sometimes I set it to sleep and it powers down and I hear the hard drive quieten and then it immediately comes back on again. It does this when there is nothing (at least nothing obvious) happening. No windows open, all applications quitted.

Thank you clever people. ;D

Recently I've been having similar problems with my macbook pro. Closing the lid doesn't always sleep it - and selecting sleep from the apple menu may or may not sleep. I have also found that even when I thought I have slept the macbook pro - when I come back I have to hit the power button and it boots - so somehow it has turned off or - I have to reset it.

Also another weird thing - my iphone kept rebooting and my macbook pro was in a wierd state - once I shut down the macbook - immediately my iphone came up (right when the macbook shut off) - it may be coincidence but maybe not.

Anyway - what do you have installed? Here are my top culprits (what is normally running)
Insomniax
Boinc - (Seti at Home)
Better Touch Tool
Dropbox
Zooom2

I also have a 32GB SSD card installed that reports - didn't eject properly when the macbook pro comes back.

Anyway - not much help but if you have any of those installed - please post.

No I don't have any of those.

I have
Adium
Skype
Cyberduck
Lightroom
iWorks
Virus Barrier
and a program which allows me to run a Windows program in X11

Out of those I usually have Adium on and sometimes Lightroom but the not sleeping tends to happen when I have quit everything. Or, if it happens and I haven't quit everything, I do quit everything and it still happens.

I do have Adium, Skype, iWorks installed - but even I've had problems with sleeping the mbp even when I don't run any of those. I'm going to have to start monitoring activity monitor to see what is running when I try to sleep.

Are you talking about Wine? I do have that installed as well.

Hmmm - well after taking out the 32gb SSD card from the express slot - it seems to sleep better now.

So do you have any external hardware connected that may be waking the computer? I believe that my SSD is the cause of my sleep problems.

Well that was something I thought too so I took out my graphics tablet. The other things connected are a 250gb external HD for Time Machine, my printer and an iPod lead which I leave in cos I'm lazy. ;D

I thought it might be TM but I never noticed it running when it happens. I also have a 1.5TB drive plugged in but not turned on.

Typically I haven't noticed it since posting but it's only been a couple of days.

Just a little update.

It did it again today and time machine was definitely running. It's the only time recently I've noticed it.

I have, however been getting the first problem more often. I know the Mac is on because the small light on my USB hub is on. I have to restart the Mac and then start up. I am wondering if it is to do with VirusBarrier and have shut off the scheduled scan.

I know, I know, there is no need for a virus program on Mac but it's not slowing it down and for the moment I feel happier with it there as there can be up to three PCs on the same system.
