Hi All,

So I have owned and operated a number of Mac machines of the last 12 years and 2 days ago I bought my latest - a spanking new Macbook Pro 15 inch with 500GB SSD. Happy!! Well that was until I started using it!

So here is a quick rundown, and maybe someone can help.

On first startup it asked me if I wanted to migrate my data - which of course I did - and that failed! After the entire process, it would not get past a 100% status bar with apple Logo. The advice from support was to format, re-install and DON'T select to migrate. After getting into Sierra, run the migration assistant, Did that - SAME THING!

So they then advised to make sure I DESELECT Computer and Network settings on the migration options. Fine! That worked and I am in, with all my data and apps in tact! YAY!!

SO... I get an error stating that iSTAT MENUS is not compatible. Fine - Go their website ensure the new version is Sierra compatible and download and install.

BOOM!! After successful install, the Mac will not boot! Gets to an Apple Logo and 100% Status Bar and goes no further.

Can't get into Safe Mode.
Performed all the resets with support - NVRAM etc etc etc.

Support now have me re-installing the OS from Recovery - Which I know will fail - and I will be left with no choice but to format and start again.

ANY IDEAS????

This is the first time I have even seen an app cripple the Mac OS like that! EVER! That's what made Apple so appealing for users like me sick of Windows failings. How am I going to ever trust this machine the next time I install an Application? This is a serious business machine, and without it I am lost. I can't afford to install one app and have then spend the next 6 hours restoring. I travel a heck of a lot too - so that would be a disaster.

What have they done to this OS?? If this is going to be how it is, there is now going to be very little difference between a Windows and Mac - And that's a **** shame!

Feeling very disappointed.
John

What did you migrate from, version of OS X and which machine? Generally, using a Time Machine backup to migrate with (prior to creating an account on the new machine) works great. Something that I have done now three times when moving from one Mac to another.

As far as I know, iStat Menus is compatible with the latest version of Sierra since I'm using that myself without problems. I realize the new touchbar MacBook Pro machines are fussy beasts according to what I've read in another forum but iStat Menus should not bring the machine to its knees.

Is your purchase still within the two week return period? You might want to take it back and swap it for another....

The old machine I am coming from is 2 years old running Yosemite. I have NEVER had this issue and I generally upgrade every 2 to 3 years - so I have gone through quite a number of machines.

This one is 2 days old. The same thing happened on our iMac that we purchased 3 weeks ago - as in - it would not migrate during install. Had to do it after - AND - had to remove Computer and Network settings from the migration.

I have never knows an app like this to take down OSX. This is a huge issue for me.

I don't know what to tell you.... I have never had a problem migrating from one Mac to a newer one. However, as I stated above, I use a current Time Machine backup for doing the migration. The only trick there is NOT to create an account on the new machine prior to doing the migration. Has always worked for me. And.. I never had to remove computer and network settings in the process.

Yeah man - Well I have tried all different methods to get the data from My TM and that was the only way it would work on Sierra. I am more concerned about one app bring the OS to its knees than the migration!!!

Well - As suspected - That failed! The system just sits at a 100% status bar and does not move!

So now I am back to a complete format, reinstall and migration - AGAIN!!!

This is a joke.

Where did you download iStat menus from? I only ask because I am running iStat menus on a 2015 MBPr and it has not or ever been a problem although I have a couple of updates recently to do with Sierra compatibility I had no problems. https://bjango.com/
It is still (especially as this occured with your new iMac) more likely to be a glitch with the Time Machine migration.
Honestly I have given up on Time Machine and now use a clone instead. It's bootable, it provides a drive to use for repairs, looks and feels like your HD, can run your device just like the internal HD albeit a little slower (depending on connection) and allows you to simply drag and drop the files/apps you need from your old device straight onto your new HD.
Alternatively you could just connect the two as per this article; https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201462 and use Target Disk Mode.

Well - I have managed to get the system booting in Verbose mode. It's now just sitting polling the battery.

the last few entries are

Disk0s1: Alignment error
Disk0s1: Alignment error
Disk1: Alignment error
Disk1: Alignment error
Disk0s3: Alignment error
Disk0s3: Alignment error
Unexpected Session: 100000 uid -1 requested by 53
Applekeystore: operation failed
busy timeout[0] (60s), kextd wait (1) ( and the some weird symbols)

And the battery polling sits there repeating! Arghh!!

Not even Apple Support have any clue.

When you say Apple Support, are you calling 1-800-MY-APPLE, or are you going to the Apple Support Discussion forums?

What an awful story. The heartache, anxiety and general frustration must be huge.

I only have this to add. One bad Mac can happen, but two seems incredible. (I am referring to your iMac).

Logic says it must be related to your backup. Some corruption, some glitch, something.

Your new MacBook can't feel like it was new after all you've had to do to it already. If it were me, I'd take it back, get a new one and I'd take my backup with me and let them do it in the store.

In fact, I wonder if you still have the Mac from which you made your backup. I'd run a fresh one on a different Ext Hard Drive and take that with you.

You have my sympathy and I wish you luck.

Thanks guys,

When I mean Apple Support - I called them and spoke to 2 senior advisors, both of which said they didn't know and that it would be best to speak to an engineer. :(

The Macbook that the back is from is only 18 months old, and is the one I am typing on now. It's great! Has never given me a problem. Only reason for a new one is a family shuffle. My wife's is now very old and getting flakey, so this one will go to her, and i get the new one - IF IT EVER WORKS!! LOL!

Ok - So last night formatted the HDD and have a fresh install of Sierra and it seems to be running OK. I am loathed to try another migration now though. :(

Does anyone know of a way that I can selectively migrate apps Apps a Data? I am happy to go and select only the core apps that I need like mail and other stuff and go from there. Migration assistant does not let you do this. :(

Cheers

OK - Another update.

So to save some time I plugged directly into my time machine (had to buy a dongle) :( Anyways...

Formatted the hard disk again with Disk Utility and painfully reinstalled Sierra with the Recover Util.

Once installed, made sure everything was running perfect. Rebooted half a dozen times, all good. Running like a new system should.

Did the migration and did nothing else but reboot. FAIL!! The system will not boot past the apple logo.

So... I am at the point of giving up. My machine (and pretty much all of the apps installed) are critical to running my business etc - so not really sure what to do now, other than tell Apple to come and get it. Very sad. :(

Terribly sad, I agree. Suggest you do what I advised in post #10. You are still within the time frame for returning the Mac. Get new one. Get the in-store staff to make sure Sierra is up to date (10.12.3) and ask them to migrate or whatever technique they suggest to get all your data & settings on the new Mac.

I did suggest creating another BU (Time Machine (TM) or clone). Give something to work with. Even take your 18 month MacBook with you - Target mode, perhaps.

Don't drive yourself to the edge.

Hoping the best for you.

Yeah thanks. Can't take the time machine - we rely on it for Wifi.
So I am now creating a fresh backup on an external HDD and that will be taken to the Apple store, and I don't want any of it back until it's running!

I am over it.

As I suggested in post#7 you may be better off cloning your original Mac HD (CCC an SuperDuper are free to try). It is easier to drag and drop stuff Since it seems to be something about your backup I have found it's easier to be selective and isolate a cause by a simple process of elimination. You can drag whole folders and multiple items so it sometimes is quite fast.

So for those still watching at home, another update.

So now I have completed everything Apple support has asked of me. The last migration also failed. It was performed by backup up this Macbook that I am working on an external hard disk with time machine. Then that hard disk was used to migrate the data to the new machine - Same result! The new machine works perfectly after the migration until the reboot. :(

Oh.. what a saga!

Have you tried a cold boot using Safe Boot Mode???

Press and hold down the shift key, but only immediately you hear the boot chime, and until you see any progress bar or gear, then login if you can if it gives you the option and hopefully without crashing.

The machine will not get to Safe mode after the Migration. It only gets as far as the Apple logo and 100% status bar.

So I assume from what you've said that the MBPro will boot and run as long as Migration Assistant hasn't been run???

And "the machine will not get to Safe mode after the Migration" statement really has me scratching my head for ideas or possible solutions.
