The past week or so, I've been getting these weird error messages saying that my computer shut down because of a problem. After doing a considerable amount of Googling, I read that certain anti-virus programmes for Mac can cause this. Prior to the panic, I was running Comodo for Mac, so I un-installed it. As I was uninstalling it, the computer gave me a weird grey screen and then rebooted after a few minutes. Now, despite shutting the computer down correctly, I still keep getting the message I mentioned above.

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5 on a 2.4 GHz i5 mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It sounds like you haven't properly uninstalled "Comodo". I haven't used it for the Mac but did use it when running Windows back in the "Dark Ages". I believe Comodo has an uninstall procedure built in, did you use it? And you might want to post the error message in your next reply for us to have a look at.

Yes, I used the Comodo uninstall tool.

Just checked the Crash report folder on my admin account, and it was empty. I did, however, have to submit an error report to Apple just after I logged into the admin account. I have copied and pasted the text below:

I'm not positive that this is your problem, but Comodo did not completely uninstall according to the kernel panic report you submitted:

com.comodo.kext.FileAccessFilter 1.0.0

As you can see above, it's still loading a kernel extension file which appears to be some kind of file access filter or a "look at" file filter.

This is one of the reasons why we do not recommend installing AV software. Some are harmless to your system while others are not. And because an AV program works well in Windows does not necessarily mean that it will be the same in OS X.

So if it is Comodo that's causing the problem, should I try using the uninstall tool again, or can I just find the file in question and delete it?

I would find that file and delete it and then see if the error message goes away.

All of the articles I've read say the kext file should be in System/Library/Extensions, and I don't see it there. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I also tried running the Comodo uninstall tool again, and it said I didn't have the programme installed.

You're looking in the correct place for the kernel extension file. It should be in:

Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/

That's where all kernel extension files are placed in OS X. Unless Comodo placed it elsewhere. Use Spotlight to see if you can find it.

Just found the folder by using the 'Go to' feature. There's all sorts of files in there, but nothing with 'Comodo' in the name (and yes, I used Spotlight as well).

EasyFind just finished scanning. Of the four files it found, two of them look suspicious (the other two are text edit files I created to try and collate all of the bits of information I kept stumbling upon). The two files I don't recognise are an AdMedic report and something with the very nondescript sounding name of 'install.log.'

Hmm, the AdMedic report was deleted, but the install.log isn't deleting itself.

Think your best course now is a format of the hard drive, suggest using deep clean, or zeroing the drive, and using Recovery to download a nice clean version o0f Mavericks. Alas if you use backups, whatever the problem is could well transfer over so a clean install of all your apps looks like it may be on.

It's no doubt owned by System, so if you go to the original, you can probably delete it using your admin password.

Find Any File allows one to do such when you press option key when doing a search that gives you full permission - usually. ;)

That's why I suggested trying Find Any File. ;)

"...Can run as root user, finding really any file on your disk, even those that are hidden from normal users."
Find Any File for Mac | MacUpdate

I've never had it fail finding and deleting such stuff.

Sorry pm-r, I didn't realise there was a difference. I'll try using Find Any File instead.

Edit: Find Any File didn't find anything beginning with or containing the phrase 'com.comodo' (without the quote marks, I hasten to add).

When I logged into my admin account earlier today, I didn't get any error messages at all. The only other things I've done (aside from running the programmes you recommended) were to install that bash update and repair permissions. I am officially confused. :)

I think what may have happened is that wayward kext was removed when you ran the uninstaller. We probably didn't realize it when you posted the first time. Anyway, as long as the error is gone we won't worry about it any longer. And by the way, you were not the only one to experience that error. We have had several more posts stating the same thing.

Don't worry about it and it sounds like you fixed the problem.

No doubt that occurred when you logged in and/or restarted and any surplus junk or surplus cached files got purged.
