shut down because of a problem message appears every time I log in

The past week or so, I've been getting these weird error messages saying that my computer shut down because of a problem. After doing a considerable amount of Googling, I read that certain anti-virus programmes for Mac can cause this. Prior to the panic, I was running Comodo for Mac, so I un-installed it. As I was uninstalling it, the computer gave me a weird grey screen and then rebooted after a few minutes. Now, despite shutting the computer down correctly, I still keep getting the message I mentioned above.

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.5 on a 2.4 GHz i5 mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It sounds like you haven't properly uninstalled "Comodo". I haven't used it for the Mac but did use it when running Windows back in the "Dark Ages". I believe Comodo has an uninstall procedure built in, did you use it? And you might want to post the error message in your next reply for us to have a look at.

Yes, I used the Comodo uninstall tool.

Just checked the Crash report folder on my admin account, and it was empty. I did, however, have to submit an error report to Apple just after I logged into the admin account. I have copied and pasted the text below:

I'm not positive that this is your problem, but Comodo did not completely uninstall according to the kernel panic report you submitted:

com.comodo.kext.FileAccessFilter 1.0.0

As you can see above, it's still loading a kernel extension file which appears to be some kind of file access filter or a "look at" file filter.

This is one of the reasons why we do not recommend installing AV software. Some are harmless to your system while others are not. And because an AV program works well in Windows does not necessarily mean that it will be the same in OS X.

You're looking in the correct place for the kernel extension file. It should be in:

Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/

That's where all kernel extension files are placed in OS X. Unless Comodo placed it elsewhere. Use Spotlight to see if you can find it.

Think your best course now is a format of the hard drive, suggest using deep clean, or zeroing the drive, and using Recovery to download a nice clean version o0f Mavericks. Alas if you use backups, whatever the problem is could well transfer over so a clean install of all your apps looks like it may be on.

Hmm, the AdMedic report was deleted, but the install.log isn't deleting itself.

It's no doubt owned by System, so if you go to the original, you can probably delete it using your admin password.

Find Any File allows one to do such when you press option key when doing a search that gives you full permission - usually.

I think what may have happened is that wayward kext was removed when you ran the uninstaller. We probably didn't realize it when you posted the first time. Anyway, as long as the error is gone we won't worry about it any longer. And by the way, you were not the only one to experience that error. We have had several more posts stating the same thing.

Don't worry about it and it sounds like you fixed the problem.

No doubt that occurred when you logged in and/or restarted and any surplus junk or surplus cached files got purged.
