Show Desktop Keyboard Shortcut - What am I doing wrong?

When I have a few apps open, I would like to quickly switch to my desktop to access folders etc...
I use expose, but that does not let me select the desktop by clicking on it, only active apps.
I have F11 set in the System Preferences Keyboard Shortcuts and Expose Shortcuts.

I'm using an imac 24" with the full size aluminium keyboard. When I press F11 in expose, or when I have many apps open, the volume icon appears on the screen and reduces the volume.

I'd expect the volume to decrease, because the F11 key is marked with a volume control icon, so how can I also use F11 for the desktop?

Any ideas?

Help much appreciated and thanks in advance...

Hold down the function (fn) key and press F11. You can change over which it's the primary thing the key does (sorry, that's not very technical) in the keyboard preferences.
