Hi there, i'm currently running a pc and and my PowerBook in my computer room at the moment. Both are connected to my broadband connection via my Netgear router. Obviously both are connected to the router via the ethernet ports. So here's my problem. I want to share files between both computers without having to disconnect a single cable, so how can i get around not having a free ethernet port? At the moment i'm using an external hard drive, i transfer files onto it from my pc, disconnect it and hook it up to my Powerbook. I hope somebody can help me out here.

both computers are plugged in at the same time? if this is so you should be able to mount the pc right on the desktop or open up the mac files on the pc

IF you know the ip address of the pc but you can not see it on the network in the finder, then open up a finder window and hit command+K and then in that box type smb://192.168.x.x or what ever your network ip addresses start with, this will mount the pc on the mac desktop and you will be able to share files over the network.
If they are not both plugged in at the same time there is no way around this with out buying a router with more ports, or a wireless router with at least one ethernet port, and then that would work.

Can't seem to get it to work properly. A friend reckons i could buy an external hard drive which can be connected to both the pc and my PowerBook. Is this possible?

If both macines can access the internet at the sane time and both machines have "Shares" or are sharing someting, it will work. Don't do the external hard drive thing.

Verify the IP's of both machines. Verify that both machines are sharing. If it's XP pro you can access without sharing by smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/c$ (x=IP) if you know an administrator password. Which I would think you do.

There's really not much more to it.

It's possible, but it's a workaround.

Make sure "Windows Sharing" is enabled in System Preferences under "Sharing", firewall off on XP and Mac (for now), and try:

from Mac (OS X):
CMD-K - SMB://x.x.x.x/sharename (or CIFS:// vice SMB://)
Also, what version are you using? I've found Jaguar to be "flaky" in PC<>Mac sharing.

from PC:
Start > Run > \\x.x.x.x\username

You can also download SharePoints from VersionTracker (freeware) to create more than just the user share on the Mac, works nicely.

I think if you want to access the PC from Mac, your XP User account need's a password, it might not accept anonymous or blank password connections if you are using SP2.
