I'm trying to see if I have the necessary ports open to talk to the apple site.
I've seen reference to a 'sever administration' control panel but can't find it.

Thanks Collin

I'll check it out, lots to read there, here's what you see when you ask for more info on the error pop up.
Open the proper ports and allow access to Apple servers

During the update and restore process, iTunes needs to contact Apple. Ensure that your computer has the following ports open and can access these servers:

* Port 80
* Port 443
* phobos.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com

If port 80 is not open then i would be checking settings in the modem or modem/router - that one should not have to be opened or 443 for that matter which is used by Mail.

Closer than you think.

Those are outbound ports. Not incoming. By default all routers allow all traffic outbound.

If you can access the internet (http 80) and secure internet (https 443) then you're fine. Apple should never need to access you for anything.

Unless you are using Little Snitch and are blocking something outbound.

Half way there!

Well thanks for those thoughts. I got to work today and downloaded iTunes onto my work PC and bingo! restored the iPhone. So, I'm thinking there must be something about the way my iMac is configured that is stopping it from doing the restore (which I think I still need to do to get my contacts and email history back). It also doesn't seem to like downloading archived files.
