Hi,

I am posting this question, because I read all other answers I could find about self-assigned IP nightmare, and nothing helped me out so far.

Here's my situation briefly:
- MBP (late 2012)
- updated to Yosemite yesterday, internet worked all day after the update
- this morning the internet was not working for me and my flatmate. We restarted the router numerous times, until after a few hours the internet came back on. It's unclear whether the issue was on our side, or Time Warner.
- however, whilst the internet now works on my flatmate's MBA, and my iPad and iPhone, my MBP displays the nightmarish "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.xxx.xxx.xxx and will not be able to connect to the internet" message.

So far I tried (numerous times each): restart the router; restart the laptop; delete the home network from preferred networks; delete Wi-Fi in the Network section of System Preferences and add it back on again; add location; delete the home network file in Keychain; renew dhcp lease; configured IPv4 (under TCP/IP) to manually, wrote 1.1.1.1, then accepted changes, then switched back on to "using dhcp"; used both the diagnostics and the assistant in Network section of System Preferences. I also deleted the com.apple.alf.plist file in Library/preferences.

I am very stressed about this, as I need my laptop for work (from home). Would anyone have any additional suggestions?

Thank you so much for you time!

Have you tried setting a valid IP address using the manual setting?
A valid IP address will be in the same subnet as your other devices - example: flatmate - 192.168.1.4, iPad - 192.168.1.5, iPhone 192.168.1.6, etc. Set your MBP to 192.168.1.x where x isn't already used but is close to the others, like 20.
Also set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, and set the router or gateway (Apple uses these interchangeably) to whatever yours is - you can find it on those other devices. In my example, the router is nearly always 192.168.1.1.

If this doesn't help, do a Safe Boot, then boot normally after the Safe Boot completes.
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

This sounds to me like it could be a MAC address issue. Does your router have the option to copy another device's MAC address?

Thank you for the suggestions!!

Gsahli, I tried manually inserting the I.P. address, the connection switched to green, and ON, but when I actually tried to use the internet (browser, e-mail etc.) it does not work.

I also did the Safe Boot. No changes.

Chas_m, I don't know what a MAC address is, but I'll try to figure out. If it does have that option, what should I do then?

By the way, additionally, in case this provides any relevant information, today I also tried to connect to internet via Thunderbolt Ethernet (with a cable), and it had the same self-assigned IP problem.

Wi-Fi works in the coffee shop, no problem, also when I connect to internet through my iPhone's Hotspot function.

My flatmate just fixed it.

What she did was change the settings in Airport Utility, under Internet, Connection Sharing:
From Bridge Mode to Public Sharing. Perhaps somebody else will have the same issue and this will be helpful.

Good luck!

Don't think you will get a response as the thread is three years old and as emma only made three posts has no doubt moved on.

Making your own thread as you have done will get an answer.
