I bought an iMac from a friend. When I try to do updates in App store it comes up with his email address (greyed out, so I cannot overtype). How can I change this to my app store account? Thanks.

Open the App Store app. On the Menu bar click on 'Store', then on Sign Out.

Then go back and sign in with your AppleID.

The issue is going to be everything on that Mac is going to be under the former users' AppleID.
The only real way to fix it is to do a clean install of OS X and sign in with your AppleID during the setup.

And if you do not have an Apple ID use this:-

https://appleid.apple.com/account

The problem is the operating system, whatever it may be, is tied to his account always!
