Hi I have a 1TB seagate external hard drive but I want to password protect it, I have tried everything but failed
I erased all of the stuff I had on it to make it like new but there is still nowhere I can see that says add password
I right click on it from finder but setting a password does not come up
Thanks for your help

Welcome aboard :) That’s odd. I’ve done it with Disk Utility in the past.

update: as IWT rightly points out, you can also do this with a right click option.

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums. Thank you for your post.

Right Click the HDD and a number of options appear.

Click on Encrypt. You will see this:

Input your Password, verify it and create a "hint" if you really need it.

Then Click on Encrypt.

Once finished. That's it. Whilst the HDD remains active (ie open), you can use it in whatever way you want. After you Eject that HDD; when you next mount it, the password will need to be entered.

Hope this helps.

Hi
When I right click I do not see that box
Hello - I plugged my 1 TB Seagate external HD into my MBAir and right-clicked - the 'Encrypt' option appeared and on selection showed the same box as in Ian's post - what disk format are you using and is the GUID partition map used - may be the issue? See HERE - Dave :)
