Hi Folks,

Can anyone direct me to a tutorial that will help me to change the screen on my G4 powerbook (17")?

Secondly - is it advisable that I try the job myself?

iFixit is good for these things. Have a look at the guide - if you feel confident you can do it, go for it. If not, maybe find someone else who can help you.
