Up untli this morning when opening Safari on my iMac i would be faced with a page headed "Farorites"Underneath would be a number of of icons representing my Favorites.In some cases there would be folders with some more favorites inside.
For some reason most of them have disapeared.I have no idea why but I would like them back.trouble is I have no idea how I put them there in the first place.if anyone one caan help that would be great.They are all still in the sidebar but cannot figure out how to get then represented as icons on thhe main page.

On Mojave 10.14.6 and with Safari 13, whatever is in the Favorites folder (in the sidebar) is represented in the Favorites section. I created a new folder for News and dropped a couple of links in there and they appeared automatically. Go to Preferences of Safari and on the General tab, ensure that New Windows open with and New tabs open with are both set to Favorites as opposed to Empty page or anything else for that matter.

Just checked and it was already set up as you suggested.
As i can see the Favs and folders in the sidebar I cannot understand why I am unable to just drag the one I want onto the main screen.There is already some there which did not disappear.

Press "command+Q" to quit out of Safari. Then Click the icon in the Dock, to re-open it.

Clicking on command and q did not change anything.
I do not mind going through the process of putting them back one by one but don't know where to start.

You don't put them back, it's done automatically, that was my point. Any link or folder created (and visible) in the sidebar will automatically get shown on the Favorites page. There is not a second list that needs to be managed. What version of Safari are you on?

Can you post a screenshot of your Safari > Preferences > General tab?

Here's what mine looks like,

See where it shows "Safari opens with" - All windows from last session? Maybe you are getting the same results, try a new option for windows or tabs

@cslogg

Maybe I am mistaking your post, but I wonder if it's the Favourites Bar which is missing?

With Safari open, go to the top Menu Bar > View > Show Favourites Bar.

Is that what you were missing? Or have I got it wrong (again)?

Do you by any chance have Safari syncing enabled in iCloud? Go to Sys Prefs->iCloud to see if Safari is checked.
