Ok, so this week, I may end up getting a Mac Mini. Anyhow, will this thing work well with me? All I'm going to do with it is use the internet a few hours a day, MSN, store and play music (about 5gigs of music) and that's pretty much it.

Thanks!

From what you mentioned in you post seems like the Mini will be just the right Mac For ya.

But keep in mind... MSN Messenger has a really crappy version for Mac that doesn't have all the bells & whistles that the Windows Version has. Things like Audio/Video chatting didn't make it to the Mac Version (Thank you Microsoft!). But on the other hand. AdiumX which is great for all your text chatting needs. If you have to have Audio/Video then aMSN is your solution.

Good Luck & have fun

Cheers

I think that the Mini will do you just fine. I am constantly amazed at how responsive they are when I play with them at the local Apple store. I keep wishing I could find an excuse to get one - they are just so wonderfully compact and good looking. Sigh... I can't find a reason since I already have a Mac, but you can, so go ahead and get it... and ENJOY it!

i just got the new C2D one with 1GB of RAM, and the 2.00GHz processor. it does amazing things. i use it to edit photos (photoshop & iphoto), download music and movies in itunes, chat on adium, work in pages and keynote, and surf the web. oh, and play the occasional AoE3 game.

now, on 1G of RAM, it struggles a little when i open photoshop, itunes, adium, and firefox simultaneously. but it handles everything fine otherwise.

i plan to upgrade to 2G in the not so distant future so i can do all of those at the same time.

Alright, if I use this thing a about 5 hours a day, how long should it last me? Do I shut it down in between or is leaving it on all the time fine?

as for how long it'll last, YMMV. there are people on here running OS X 10.4.10 on a 6 year old PowerMac. I have friends running their Mini's as DVR's, get used pretty hard and are 4 years old.

i always shut down my equipment before i go to bed at night, and turn it on when i wake up. it's all a personal preference if you want to shut it down or put it to sleep. you'll be amazed at how much faster a mac is waking up from a sleep mode.

on the contrary, my PC's almost never lasted more than 2 or 3 years. either because they needed to be upgraded to support the next version of something, they started running so slow, a water pipe exploded in the roof and soaked it, or because i like keeping up with technology.

I have one of the first months production of the G4 1.25Ghz Mini's. Used it hard and most of the time 24 hours a day since I purchased it. Never had one issue with it. Very reliable system. Also have a Core Duo 1.66Ghz mini. Used it hard since I bought it. Still works like a dream and was doing 2 cores of Folding at home 24 a day for 6 months. Never one hiccup!
