Bit of a newbie question this from a UK user: how can you rename Trash in OS 10.12.16?
All the Google results are quite old and refer to previous versions of the OS. They mention System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj, which doesn't contain a file InfoPlist as far as I can see! Merely a file OpenSSH.strings.

There is no System/Library/CoreServices....... in the user hidden library so it must be in the other:

Note that the string you mentioned only contains the "default.plist":

Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/default.plist

And... you can not ordinarily edit those type of plist files without a proper plist editor.

The info.plist file you're looking for is located here:

Macintosh HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/info.plist

"What exactly are you trying to accomplish by renaming the trash?" Yes that would be my question. As a former MAC newbie, I have found that there are always better or even not necessary things to do in MACs compared to PCs. Don't tinker too much before you understand MAC world. Often one action (which would have been normal in a PC) just causes further troubles down the line in MACs because it's not open and clear exactly all the repercussions of such actions. Trust me - don't tinker unnecessarily!

If you want a copy of your current trash rather than putting the files back to where they were, just copy them, make a new folder called oldtrashDate and paste them there. If you are trying to accomplish something else, do let the board know in detail.

I want to rename the ‘Trash’: that’s all! In the UK we don’t use 'trash', we use waste basket or something similar!

The terminology grates! And from Google searches going back to 20?? it should be possible, but nobody has shown a solution with the current Mac OS.

Although a newbie with the Mac, I have good competence with Windows and can follow straightforward instructions!

I share your pain. I use iBank which is great except I go apoplectic everytime I see that it refers to my current account as a checking account. Aaaarrrrggghhh!

I don't think anyone is questioning your ability to follow any directions we might come up find / develop. Sometimes, particularly with new users transitioning from Windows, the initial question asked is about one thing when the goal is to actually do something else.

Recent versions of the macOS are a bit more "locked down" than early versions were. The up side to this is that it is less vulnerable to some of the types of nasties often seen on the Windows side. The down side is that it is more difficult to make some of the types of modifications you might like to make.

I'm not saying what you want to do is impossible just that it might be a bit more difficult.

BTW I'm not sure this affects things for English at the OS level but it your computer set for American or UK English?

Actually, but I could be mistaken, :Smirk: I think in the OP's Sierra they'll find the place where changes they want to change/replace will be found in:
EDIT - deleted this line…my error…
or should that be:
HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/Localizable.strings
or:
HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/default.plist - nope!!!

I was sure there used to be a utility that could change such things or at last personalize some, but can't recall the name and I'd question if it would still work in OS X 10.12+ and above.

The same filename and path for changing the "Trash" name in Mavericks, 10.9.5 doesn't seem to exist in Sierra.

If he purchased his Mac in the UK it will come with a British English keyboard and already setup for British English spelling.

Yes, that's where it's located at. Note what I replied in post #3 (bolded).

Also, a second warning: Plist files can not be edited with a normal text editor; they must be edited with an app designed for that purpose. I used to have such an app but it died when I upgraded to Yosemite.

Note, I corrected my post (#9) and listed what I thought should be the file they want/need to edit. If, as you say they have a proper editor.

But even I who have done some light mods would be hesitant to do such modding with the latest OS X versions, as they really don't seem to appreciate having any files etc. mucked around with.

I was bit surprised when I read this post. I also live in the UK but don't really have any problem with americanisms apart from in Banktivity, which has a UK version and still insists on me using 'Checking Accounts'.

As far as 'Trash' goes it is called 'Recycle Bin' on my wife's PC and that title shows all the time BUT on my Mac the 'bin' has no title displayed at all unless you hover or click.

Just my views on this sunny Sunday morning :))

I agree with you over "Checking accounts" and "Current accounts" in Banktivity which has to be a stupid name for a programme. The same goes for "checks" and "cheques" I too have tried to change the "trash" to "waste" but with no success!

There is no shortage of other names for "Trash".

One could consider:

Waste bin/basket
Rubbish
Refuse
Garbage
Land Fill

or if one had yearnings for an earlier life - Potty.........

Not only that, but just changing the "Trash" name would only be part of the transition and doesn't address the other occurrences like; "Move to Trash" and the various occurrences of "Empty Trash" etc.

or if one had yearnings for an earlier life - Potty.........
Which some may interpret as being a bit crazy… :Blushing:

Or others with the latest OS X may think it's just a place for the animated or plain piles of poo (sh*t)… yes, a "new OS X feature" I'm told!!!
Good grief…:\
