Every time I try to empty my rubbish bin, it says it cannot remove iWeb as it is in use? I can't even find it as when I do a search it says that it is in the bin! I have researched this to the best of my ability, but I give up. Maybe I am OC but when I empty my bin I want to see it clean. How to I get rid of this please? I have looked in library, application support, just about everywhere to no avail. Thank you

It may be easier to go into Trash and 'put back' iWeb first. Then have a look at this site.

Thanks for the quick reponse. I tried that, but then it says - "You can't open iWeb.app because it's in the bin." Auuuugh! I dragged onto my desktop and when I try to open it, it says you can't do that because the app is damaged or incomplete.

As it is an app can you not just drag it out of the trash and put it into Applications?

Also how about opening Activity Monitor and locate iWeb then 'Stop' it. You should then be able to empty trash as it is no longer running.

Don't drag it. Just right click and then pick "Put back." It should then go where it was when you deleted it.

It goes back to the desktop which is where I had dragged it, and does not appear anywhere in the Activity Monitor, so I have no clue where the little devil is hiding. I just updated to Monterey a couple of days ago and hoped that would somehow miraculously solve that issue, but nope... it's still sitting there grinning at me from the rubbish bin.

I'm confused. If you use "put back" to put it back, as you said, to the Desktop, it should not be in the rubbish bin now. Are you saying it is in both places?

You might now try a Safe Boot and see if you can trash/empty trash then.

I'm sorry, I should have been clearer. No - if I either drag it out of the bin or choose "put back" it is no longer in the bin, but then there is still no way of deleting it. Again, the error message I get when just as an experiment and on a fact finding mission I tried to open it, was - "the app is damaged or incomplete." Ergo - unable to be opened. I just don't understand why it's such a mission to do this.

It probably has some component that launches at your login. That is why I suggested a Safe Boot, as that will block anything other that pure Apple products from launching. Then you can do a delete in Safe Mode, empty the trash and it should go away. You can then boot normally and it will stay gone.

Hi. Nice to see you back again.

If it's still refusing to delete because "it's still in use", try something that Pine Man (Pete) suggested in post #5.

Open Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor).

On the left, look for and identify iWeb and delete. To help you, I've created a screenshot. I've used iStat Menu Status as an example. Click to highlight iWeb and then click on X to shut it down. Follow the red arrows. Then try to delete.

And just in case that doesn't work, I wonder if the OP's OS Finder (memu) still has the "Secure Empty Trash" option in the drop-down menu that just might empty the trash for them???

Or maybe even using Find Any File.app and using its root user permissions option (press option key prior to actually searching) and then use the right-click -> Delete Immediately option, or one of the other options that would be available???

There is a simple, free solution that was designed specifically for the situation you find yourself in.

Download:

TrashIt! (free)

If you double-click on TrashIt's program icon, it will delete what is in your Trash with extreme prejudice.

If you drop either a folder or file(s) onto TrashIt's program icon,
it will delete what you dropped on it, no matter where those files or
folders reside. (They don't have to be in the Trash can.)

Once again, I'll channel Randy and agree. I have that program on my Mac. I don't have to use it often, but it hasn't failed me yet when I do.

TrashIt! works by invoking the Unix command to force-trash something. So, basically, it's just using a feature that already exists in the Macintosh OS.

By the way, if you want a modern replacement for iWeb, I have an excellent one, and it's FREE!

BlueGriffon (free. There are three versions, two of which aren't free, but the free version is full-featured and sincerely free. It isn’t a demo or crippled version.)

“What-you-see-is-what-you-get” Web site creation program (there is also a built-in text editor if you choose to work with the raw HTML, and it helps you by allowing you to add HTML commands with one click). Easy to use (if you know how to use a word processor you will take to this program quickly), and full featured. It's great for beginners and experienced Web designers alike. If you liked Apple’s departed iWeb, you will like this program. Many folks are skeptical upon approaching this program because it seems too-good-to-be-true. It’s true!
Free video tutorial series:
(The tutorial does not use the Mac version of the program, but the program is virtually identical across platforms.)
A tip for using BlueGriffon:
When you first open it, the interface will look terrible. Don't get discouraged. Do this:
BlueGriffon menu --> Preferences --> General tab --> Theme -> enable "Light"
The interface will now look world's better!

Thank you, but it does not show up in Activity Monitor? I looked yesterday and again this morning.

Okay. So it's not "still in use". Fair enough. That's excluded.

Not using the name, but some subtle component may be running, like some helper or kext or even a plist. That's why I suggested Safe Boot, too prevent the loading, then trying the empty trash.

I think I have to just give up on this. There seems to be no solution unless there are hidden files somewhere that I would need to delete and I can't seem to find those. These are my error messages. The can't open the application is when I "put it back" and then try to open it, so something is wonky there.

I will try the safe boot when I can, but my work is in Photoshop and if I save a file in order to close PS and safeboot, I will lose the history states on that file and sometimes I just can't do that. Something Adobe has yet progressed to - saving the history states. So as soon as this latest project is over and all files saved where I don't need the history states I will try the safe boot.

I'm not sure if it is relevant BUT iWeb is/was a 32bit app that was discontinued after Mojave. It is not capable of running on any OS after that and maybe it was put into one of those Relocated Items Folders?

Have you tried using Finder and selecting Macintosh HD or similar and entering iWeb in the Search box or even carrying out that search in the 'Hidden' Library folder?
