Obviously this is bad news...

On my powerbook, my "Headset socket" is glowing red, when I put headsets in there, I can hear music from my laptop. When I remove the headsets, the socket starts to glow red and I can't hear anything on my speakers. :( What's going on here? Is it supposed to glow red? and if it does, does it mean something on it is screwed up? The laptop is a month old.

My other problem is, when I hit F4-F5 it usually adjusts my music volume.. but when I hit it now, it doesnt do anything. The F3 button to mute and un-mute works perfectly fine.

Please help guys!

You must have a 17" PB. The glowing red is for digital audio. IOW, you can connet a fibre audio cable to that port. The port is also analog for regular electrical signals. Not sure why your speakers don't work, maybe a bad connector or why your volume controls don't work. Check your control panel for having to use the alt key is toggled on or off.
