Your Mac's Specs
iMac-Monterey-12.7.6, 27"Ret., Late 2015, 3.2 GHz, i5, 24 GB, 250 SSD, 2 OB screens, 27",32"
I just rebuilt the mail. Prior to doing so i had around 250 emails all read. i also erased all the emails in the trash.

When it finished rebuilding it is showing 1092 emails of which 702 are unread. i have gone through this process three times with somewhat similar results.

Can someone explain what i am doing wrong?

My educated guess is that you have an IMAP account, and that when you rebuild Mail's database, Mail downloads everything that is still on your mail provider's server. This is normal. To fix it for the future, set things to be deleted from the IMAP server after being read, or after a certian number of days after being read.

Good point and probably the correct answer for the problem and as a POP email account user I keep forgetting that the IMAP email accounts for differently especially after a rebuild.
