I am trying to re-install logic pro 8 on a mid 2007 imac. However, getting message reading: You can’t open the application “LogicStudio.mpkg” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.' The machine is now running 10.9.5 mavericks - could this be a reason why not installing?

PowerPC apps will not run in any version of OS X from Lion on. Since your MacBook Pro is running Mavericks, Logic Pro 8 will not install. PPC apps will run in Snow Leopard and below.
