RAM not freeing up after closing applications

I know sometimes this is normal, but with my iMac G5, whenever I have 600MB being used and I close all my running applications, I still have about 500MB still being used. That means only 100MB is being freed. However, after a fresh restart I'll have only about 200-250MB used. Can anyone comment?

Its the way OS X and Unix for that matter deals with RAM. Its hard to describe, basicly RAM is set and used and can be used again, never used and currently in use.

Could the be related to PC2700 in iMac G5?

Are you looking at Activity Monitor? It divides memory usage into 4 different categories: Wired, Active, Inactive, and Free. Basically wired and active mean used. Inactive and free mean free. After you close a program the memory will become inactive not free, I don't really know the difference but I wouldn't worry about it.

I like the way MenuMeters displays memory usage, it just displays Used and Free. Less confusing than Activity Monitor.
