When you play a movie in Quicktime X, the large black bar has all the controls on it. You know the one that covers part of the movie art the bottom of the screen of the movie. And as you know the black control bar dissapears when you are playing the movie but comes back when the movie is paused or you mouse over the movie.

I want the control bar to appear when I mouse over the movie. And it does so no issue there.

But when I pause the movie the black control bar appears there. And that's so annoying. Is there a terminal command or work around to have the black control bar appear when I mouse over a paused movie only and not there when I do not mouse over a paused movie.

Why I ask this is I've wanted to take a screenshot of a frame in a movie from time to time so I pause the movie abd the stinkin black control bar is in the rode. So I had to use quicktime 7 to get a nice screen shot. But if I could do this in quicktime X, I'd be really happy.

So does anyone know how to fix this really annoying issue in quicktime X?

[edit] I did a little bit of googling and found these 2 terminal commands.

defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGUIVisibilityNeverAutoshow 1defaults write
com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGUIVisibilityNeverAutohide 1defaults write

But when I try to use them in terminal I get this error:
defaults[591:903] Unexpected argument write; leaving defaults unchanged.

So I dunno what's up. If those 2 termnial commands are a solution to my question or not I really don't know.

I don't know about a solution to that specific problem, but an alternative would be using VLC instead and just take a screenshot from that.

There is a easy way round it - As u have QT X then u probably have 10.6.2 (helps to give that info) which has the ability to record the screen so just record the bit you like including a bit before and after then play it in QT 7 Utilities Folder and pause at appropriate place and take a screen shot. Or just play it in QT 7. Screen movie is in Movies folder.

Thanks Colin. I've been doing the work around you've been saying for a while now. And yes it gets the job done. Quite nicely thank you. But that still does not fix the Quicktime X issue. Maybe there is no fix and I have to use the work arounds. Thanks to both comments here.

Well I by off chance found a solution to the issue.

One of the things Onyx can do is: "always hide this black control bar" in Quicktime X. Sure I have to re-enable it to move through the movie. Sure even that is not a perfect solution, but it means I can do everything I want in Quicktime X.

Here's a very elegant solution if you happen to have Adobe Creative Suite. Open the movie in Photoshop and do your screen saves from there.

I suspect that the problem is that "defaults write " )NOTE the space after the word 'write') is the command that does whatever follows it. However, your text shows you have "...NeverShow 1defaults write com.apple..." The point is, you have two commands to write but the second command is not on a separate line. In Terminal, you should see:
yourNormalCursorCaharacters: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGUIVisibilityNeverAutoshow 1
Press Return
Now you can enter the second command.
yourNormalCursorCaharacters: defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGUIVisibilityNeverAutohide 1
Press Return
