You can tell from when you bought it, and what the specs are.

Yep. Core Duo's are Gen 1, Core 2 Duo's are Gen2.

2GB Intel Core Duo 2GB RAM
Click the little bitten apple

Click on the bitten apple on the very top left of your desktop/then click on "About This Mac"/then click on "More Info...
This will give you the version #.
The 1st gen macbooks only had a 1 core processor.
The 2nd had a Dual core 2GB processor w/512 MB RAM and the current ones have either a Dual core 2.16 or a Dual core 2 GB processor w/1 GB. Or something like that.
