Problems With Tiger+iTunes

Hi all,
I recently upgraded my Mac from Panther to Tiger, and this gives me some problems with iTunes.
I keep all my music on my external harddisk (western digital) have iTunes set up like this:

Library and an Alias of the Music folder on my computer and the real Music Folder on the harddisk.

Now the problem is, since I've installed Tiger, my music seems to get stuck once in a while, like my HDD is loading it in or something and this gives a delay of a few seconds. Also whilst it is stuck, the led of my HDD starts flickering wildly.

Is there any way to solve this?

My Tech Specs

By the way, I work on an Imac G5 (1,6 GHz) with 512 DDR SDRAM. The HDD is via USB in case it is necessary to know this. It could perhaps be a good old case of outdated hardware? I surely hope not
