Hi,

I have been using my Macbook wirelessly for over a year now and never had a problem before until this morning when I was surfing the internet and for some reason it asked me for my WEP key which was not a problem because after entering it my wireless connection started working again, but after a while it stopped working again but this time it didn't ask me for the WEP key in fact the wireless icon has the check mark as it would be working but its gray out.

I know it is not the router because my other laptop is working fine and the internet works fine if I connect it to a wired connection.

This is the message I see in my Status screen.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Oh, my network is named "tigernetwork".

Thanks

Apple self assigns an IP Address 169.something as you show when it cannot get DHCP. Try turning off and turning on the airport and see if it finds the DHCP server.

This tends to happen when you can authenticate to the network but do not complete all authentication - i.e. you know the password but you Media Access Control address isn't in the allow list. It also tends to happen when you have repeater hardware that is up but isn't connected to the main network i.e. apple's airport express - you can connect to the express but it isn't connected to the network so you don't get assigned an ip address.

The last place to look is the router itself - look in the logs and see if it says anything about your MAC address not getting an IP address through dhcp.

First of all thank you very much for your reply.

I turned it off and turned it back on and nothing happen, I also unplug my router and my modem and nothing.

Any other suggestion?

Thanks

Hi,

I just found out that I cannot open the security panel so I'm wondering if this has something to do with the problem I'm currently experiencing.

This is the message I get when I click the Security icon in the System Preferences.

Any idea?

Thanks a lot

Well that is bad - it looks like system preferences is crashing when you try to open Security. It could be one of your system files got corrupted and that is what is stopping you from setting up wireless.

I am guessing you rebooted already and tried again.

If you can't open it after the normal reboot stuff try running onyx and see if it fixes anything
Titanium Software

Once you get that sorted out, I'd strongly recommend you upgrade to a WPA2 key rather than WEP. WEP has been broken for years now and is considered these days to provide no security at all.

I downloaded Onyx ran cleaning, maintenance, automation and log but it didn't help.

Any other options?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Did a complete restore from Time Machine from a few days ago and it solved the issue.

Thanks
