Hi, sometime at the end of the year i'm going to buy a Powermac g5. I want the dual 2.0g version, but my mate reckons there's rumour going around that apple are going to release a dual 3.0g version. Is this just a rumour or did my mate really read it in a mag?

At WWDC 2003, Steve Jobs announced that there would be 3 ghz G5 chips available by "next year" (which would be July 2004). You can either choose to believe Steve or choose not to.

Buy now or later?

Going to buy a G5 soon(see my specs) and I was wondering whether I should buy my G5 in March, or I should wait........

I heard in one of the other forums that Apple may release a 2.5 GHz G5 relativley soon, so, I was wondering about these 3 questions:

1. Should I buy my G5 now or wait?

2. Is apple going to introduce a 2.5 GHz G5 soon? If so, what will happen to the rest of the PowerMac line?

3. If apple does introduce a 2.5 G5 soon, will the single 1.6 still exist? Will the price be the same? Higher? Lower?

Any help on this situation will be greatly appreciated.....I really would like to get my G5 sooner, since I've been waiting for it for about 6 months now........

Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you are.

Rumors were that they were supposed to announce the g5's today (march 23rd), but many think that they are waiting till the 30th, when their memory offers end.

As far as what new models they are going to introduce, not many know but I've heard things that the highest is either going to be a 2.4 ghz, a 2.5 ghz, or a 2.6 ghz. Some even think they will release the 3.0 now, but I highly doubt that. If they do update the line-up, they probably will not be selling the 1.6 anymore. I've gotten emails about special deals at the apple store dealing with price drops on the 1.6 (maybe other G5 models too, didn't read it carefully).

My advice to you is to wait. If it doesn't happen the 30th, it will probably happen sometime in april. If you are interested in the 1.6 model, you'll get way more bang for your buck if you hold out just a little bit more. The rumors floating around are that the entry level model is either going to be the dual 1.8, a single 2.0, and some even think it might be the dual 2.0, but even I don't think that will happen.

Hope this helps. BTW, many signs point to the power macs being updated. The front page of apple's web store, discounts on older g5 models, refurbs very cheap and they havn't updated them in awhile, so many think they are keeping on their schedule with g5 updates and one is due within the coming month.

I was waiting for it to happen today, but sadly it didn't. Hopefully next week!

G5 3.0

Well here it is May 16th and nothing so far.
I'm looking at buying my first Mac. And would like to purchase soon. I can delay for a little while if there's something new coming out. But I can't wait to get off windows. Has anybody heard anything yet?

Just hold off until June 28th, that's the day that Steve Job's keynote is, and he's supposed to announce all sorts of new goodies such as the new Tiger OS and possibly a new G5 lineup.

Just remember, it's always faster, and cheaper, tomorrow. If you need your machine now, buy it. The Dual 2ghz machine SCREAMS.

All this talk of 2.5 GHz and 3 GHz. Is everyone forgetting that the G5s can support up to 8 Gig of RAM!

Max out the current editions before you even think about getting faster processors. What are you all trying to do, produce "The Silmarillion" in your bedrooms! :D

Sorry, not sure how many of you will get that joke, but I hope at least one person does!

Ok, it took me a minute but I got it.
Please have pity on me - I don't own an apple yet. I just want to maximize my computer dollars. I don't buy new computers very often. The last time I did it was an 8088 with a v20 co-proccessor. If you know what that is your a geek or old. Since then I've subsisted on hand me downs. I know I wont buy another one again for a long time. I don't even know how to post things on this forum all cool like you guys do yet.

No worries. Honestly, you'll be just fine no matter what G5 you purchase. Just as an example of the lifespan of a Mac, we are still using our G3-333mhz Rev D iMac on a daily basis. I'm even upgrading it to Panther this weekend. That machine was new in, if I recall correctly, 1998. Six years old and it'll still run the newest OS.

And I am old enough and geeky enough to remember the v20's and v30's. :) Though my first PC was a TRS-80 Color Computer.

I would agree that many things will happen before the G5s are old or behind, like the registry in... well let's not go there :p
