I have a 2009 iMAC 27" which runs slow.
Running iStat Pro it reads out the power supply temp at 78 degC.
This is with the machine just idling, running no apps.

This seems very high to me. What is a normal temp?
Am I sitting on a time bomb?

It's a 9 year old computer. First thing I would do is clean the inside with canned compressed air.

Why wouldn't it be slow using an old platter drive?

If you are planning to keep it consider installing a Solid State Drive, but not a SATA III high speed drive, particularly a Samsung.
