Just inherited a Power Mac G5 (SN: XB336150NVR) All components check out OK, but HD is trash and I cannot clone. Need OS.

I am retired old guy with technical background and use hobbies To stay mentally and physically sharp. Computers and electronics is one of my hobbies.

Are you asking us a question, such as... where can I get a copy of the OS? First, you know that the hard drive needs to be replaced. Next, you're going to need a retail version of OS X to install. Note that it has to be a retail version. Model specific versions of OS X will not work. Versions of OS X for that machine would be Tiger or Leopard (10.4.X or 10.5.X). Probably best to buy Leopard. The best place to buy a retail DVD of Leopard is from eBay or Craig's list. Latest prices seem to be around $55 to $60 for a copy.

Thanks for the feedback. That's what I needed to know. I know the G5 is old technology, but so am I. My introduction to the electronic age of enlighten came from a PHD in mathematics lecturing us on the new fangled computers and electronic calculators, boondoggles that are sure to prove their uselessness as she waved her slide rule over his head. She died before PC's became of age.

I got luck and bought a copy of Leopard for $30 (+ $11.30 shipping) with an old Powerbook G4. The guy listed the macbook with all the original disks. When I looked closely at the posted picture I could see the black copy of the OS and realized that was a cheaper way to go.

The Powerbook actually works too!

One thing to remember Apple no longer supports operating systems prior to Lion OS X.7 with Security Updates. You can run OS X.5 Leopard on a G5 but not the best if you want to get online.

That is a great suggestion, get the OS I need and something else to play with.
