Popups, Firefox & Safari

(OS X Mountain Lion on my iMac.)
Since Jan.1, 2015 I am fighting popups constantly.
I have tried many of the suggestions given online but they still appear.
They are appearing so often that I hesitate getting online!
I don't know much about the technology so I'm afraid to download anything that may give me even more problems. Isn't there a simple solution?

Safari has what I would call a rudimentary popup blocker (Safari>>Preferences>>Security tab>>>check the box).

You also download & install "Adblock Plus":

Also suggest installing and running an app called Adware medic if you haven't done so. Some of the popups may be due to adware. Get it directly from the adwaremedic.com site.
