Which ones would not play....the copied ones? I would have a look in system preferences, CD's/DVD's and make sure it has DVD player optioned for when you insert a video DVD.

I too are new to Macs, but other than making backup copies I have not had a problem playing any DVD's, including backsups made on my PC. On the MBP use Midia Fork, Handbrake, or Mactheripper....all free downloads. I have Toast 8 also, it has issues with DVD encrytion.

Hope that is of some help.

P.S. Generally we do not discuss copying DVD's etc on this forum as it could breach forum rules.

Have you tried several DVD's? If not, re-boot and try at least 3 or 4 comercial DVD's, not copies.
Will the drive read the OS X disks that came with the MBP?
Have you tried playing a CD? Does it work?

Try doing a full hard drive permissions repair. I had a similar problem and it worked for me.

On a side note I've noticed similar "dvd not being read" problems by many users. Maybe apple should look into it.
