photos on unformatted SD card

I took some photos on a SD card on a new Nikon but forgot to format the card. I can see the photos in iPhoto and Lightroom but they can not be imported. A window pops up and tells me they are in a unrecognizable format. Any help from anyone?

The card cannot be unformatted or the camera would not write to it at all. If you can see the pictures, they must be there. How are you "seeing" the pictures? How is the card mounted to your machine? What machine? What OS? Basically, read the link in my sig and post again.
