I just have a halogen lamp shining down on the smoke from an incense (don't know if you would get all the colors from another source), I snapped that with a 60mm macro lens on a Nikon D70. The shot really wasn't planned at all, just pointed and pushed the shutter button.

i saw it in a magazine but they did it with strobes and i was wondering if it could be done with a regular lamp
