Permissions in Yosemite

I attempted to save a new Excel file to my HD, and was told "You do not have permission to save files to Macintosh HD" followed by "Make sure you have write access for this location, or select a different location." I am the owner and only user. How can I not have permission, and how do I check re: write access?

I don't know why Yosemite changed my permissions (though from other posts mine was a minor version of the problem). However, I figured my problem out.
