Hi guys,

I get this error a lot recently when booting up my iMac, any idea of the cause?

So far I have:
Restored from a Time Machine backup
Done the Apple hardware test thing (can't remember what it's called, but took about 3 hours and found nothing)
First aid on the hard drive (by holding cmd-R on startup)

Doing the latter (first aid) has so far got it to boot properly straight afterwards. So maybe my hard drive is on its way out?

Let me know if I can post any other relevant info.

Cheers :)

Hi Richard and a warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

What you are getting is a Kernel Panic and despite, or maybe in light of, what you have done already, I'd say that your HDD is dying.

You mentioned that you had a Time Machine (TM) backup. Well done, many don't. I don't know how you used your TM Backup (BU) to restore - bear in mind the possibility that it too could be corrupted, so any restoration should be via Migration Assistant (MA). That way you only restore your apps and settings etc - not the OS.

As for further info; what OS is running; on which model and year of Mac; and it wouldn't hurt to know how much RAM you have AND how much free space is left on your HDD.

For now, backup everything. Please post back.

When you get the next one, if you can boot up go into Console and post the full message here. The problem may well be if it is software it has also been included in any backup.

Hmm..Kernel trap at 0x00..00 (invalid address). There is no code at virtual or physical address 0x00...00, thus the panic. Your backtrace looks OK, looks like an invalid jump for some reason. The first aid on the HD would mark any bad blocks as such. It's possible that some data was on a bad block and got moved or something..very hard to know. How old is this iMac? Also the message "Mac OS version: Not yet set" means that the failure happened VERY early..

Not a bad idea to think about upgrading to an SSD if your machine already doesn't have it..

I didn't use Migration Assistant, I'll have a look at doing it that way.

I bought the iMac in December 2012 and the specs are:
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X8GB
3TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
OS: Sierra 10.12.4
Available drive space: 2TB

It's already had a new hard drive, about 18 months ago if I remember correctly. It got recalled as a lot of the 2012 iMac hard drives were apparently faulty. I never had this type of error message before though.

Many thanks for the replies so far :)

I just checked my console and it doesn't look good :/ (I'm not that savvy with this type of thing, bear with me)

So on the console under devices and the 'errors and faults' tab it looks like I had 358 errors when booting up tonight and they keep happening (already 371 while typing this). Here are the first bunch. I don't think I can paste them all.

Another pattern that I've noticed so far is that I don't seem to get these errors when restarting, only when I boot up after a shut down.

For starters go into /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.plist and drag the .plist file to the Trash, do not empty. shut down and start, not restart. This will make a new .plist file and see if any better.

Next off do you have any security or antivirus apps installed? If so use the uninstaller and remove them entirely. If you run Mackeeper you may need more advikce to rid yourself of this mal;ware.

Still no joy boot into Recovery Mode and run Disk First Aid to check out the state of the hard drive.
