Hey guys I remember there being a post about this a while back but I cannot find it. The paint on my latch release button is fading/flaking off. It looks like crap and it's driving me nuts. What can I do? I have Applecare btw.

Do you think it can be replaced under warranty?

I would think so. If you treat it good and you haven't done anything yet it's flaking I would think that it's a problem with the paint or how it was applied. Phone apple and complain. Explain the situation.

i know for me, i have to use my finger tip to even hit that button in all the way.

i wonder if nails just chip the paint off eventually?

That's a good point. It's only chipping on the left side with the light, which coincidentally is where I usually press the button. It still should not flake off no matter how many times I do it. That's just cheap quality

I was reading and I heard that Apple does not cover cosmetic defects under warranty. Is this true?

you're talking about the latch release button where hte sleep light is?? if so - that happend to my 12" pbook.. i think that layer is just clear coat to protect that button from getting scratched etc..

what i did was use my fingernail to scrape the rest of it off.. it took forever to scrape off.. i scrapped that gunk off 1.5 yr ago - so dont worry about it rusting..

I called AppleCare today and the lady told me just to take it to my local Apple store and they'll replace it on the spot. I have an appointment tomorrow at 1:15. Gotta love their customer service. : )

Update: I took it in today and they're going to replace it under warranty. Actually, they have to replace the whole bottom case. I guess it's all one piece...? The parts should be in Friday and I will drop it off then.

Glad you are getting your bottom case replaced. Just to see if my latch may also be eligible for replacement, did all the paint come off of yours to reveal gray, or just a clear coating of some sort?

I have to do the same with my MBP. Is this normal?

Mine looked like there were a bunch of chips on it and it was very noticable.

I got the same issue as you were. Where did you get their service? I mean What country were you get their service? Because I am in Thailand. And I went to customer service here. They said that they can not help me to replace the new one with no cost on it. I am still under warranty. And I do not know why do not they service the same as you?
