I'm not sure we have enough to go on here. However, one thing I'm certain of : if you click Open in the App Store, then it's already downloaded. Perhaps check your Downloads folder and see if it's in there? .

Maybe it's not installed correctly. If you download the very handy and free AppCleaner from FreeMacSoft, see below.

Screenshot 2025-04-12 at 09.49.06.png Click on this screen shot.

You can Uninstall any app and all its bits and pieces just by dragging it to the "Drop Apps Here" window youre bound to get use out of it.

You could then download the app from the App Store again. By default it should have gone into your Downloads folder as Macbiter suggested, so you may already have it but it may be in the form of an "Installer." These are usually .dmg files and self-explanatory once you double click on it, the simple ones just open a little window which suggests you Drag the app into the Applications Folder picture. You can then Eject the Installer, trash it and open the app from your App Folder.

I should have mentioned one other thing; do you have a Microsoft account? eg. Are you already using MS Word or other element from the MS Office Suite for macOS?
Looking at it on the App Store it "looks" pretty good but it will no doubt require your MS user name and password and quite likely like all other third party email clients will require a unique App-Specific Password generated at the Manage my Apple Account site here; Apple Account

Something is seriously wrong with your installation of Outlook. You can try:

Office-Reset (free)
https://office-reset.com/
(Office-Reset is a free downloadable utility that you can use to fix problems and errors encountered with Microsoft Office for Mac apps. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, Teams and AutoUpdate. The tool can help fix app launch errors, freezes, hangs, crashes, bad plug-ins, corrupt templates, performance issues, and confusing error messages. Does not delete your documents and workbooks.)

If that doesn't work, I'd recommend a FULL uninstallation (don't just drag its app icon to the trash) of Outlook, and then you should download and install a fresh copy. See here for instructions on how to fully uninsall Outlook:

I think Randy's suggestion is even better than mine in Post #4 as it's MS Specific. With MS its always important to remove all elements of a previous installation prior to a new one to avoid conflicts.

You didnt mention if you had any other parts of the MS Office for MacOS suite. You can often get bargains on the whole range direct from Microsoft. I have the Home an Office package which cost less than AU$100.00 which includes Outlook, Word and others. You can always delete the apps you don't want.

The best thing about that is you can always download the whole package again to a new computer from Purchases on your MS Home Accounts page.

I have found issues with one-drive in office, and conflicts with the stand-alone version in the App Store, and even using App Cleaner had issues removing everything, perseverance is the only way forward, but I still do not use Outlook, it is not a patch on the Windows version, and I found it prone to problems.

Jimmy's, me too. Really I have the whole MS Office suite solely for Word and OneDrive to store my Word .docs. Recently I have investigated Teams due to the upcoming sundowning of Skype. There are some options for existing Skype account holders. I found it invaluable and cheap for calls to overseas landlines, sadly it was obviously to good to last😢

We moved from Skype to Teams at work (just before I retired), and it was quite overly complicated for simple communication, as it encompasses the whole MS suite of programmes, including document storage for me it was a right royal PITA.

What is wrong with Zoom? No one has mentioned that option.

Sorry I got your name wrong, darn spell checker. Yes I think Teams is going to be unworkable for my purposes. The change over offers from MS are only temporary. I'm going to give Viber a try but there arent many good VOIP services left to choose from.

@ferrarr, "What is wrong with Zoom?" Can't make voice calls to land lines. What I used to use Skype for was telephone calls to medical insurance companies for claims, banking customer services, travel agencies and government services in Australia from Indonesia where you frequently get put on hold, cut off or placed in a cue waiting anything up to 40min to speak to someone live. Skype's international call rates were cheap, surplus credit lasted forever and was easy to top up.

Thanks for that explanation Rod. I forgot about not being able to do calls to landlines.

Okay, thats defineitely wrong, can I just confirm that when you click on the Apple Menu (top left corner) and click on System Settings you do not see something like this:

Screenshot 2025-04-16 at 10.04.41.png

I'm in Dark Mode so ignore the black background. Am I getting you right? You don't see all of the other menu items; WiFi, Bluetooth, Network ,ect.? Just General?
What about your Apple account Does that appear at the top of the sidebar.

I guess the first thing I would suggest is turning the computer OFF at the wall outlet. Give it 10 Mins then turn it back ON at the wall, boot it up and see if things are the same.
If so, launch Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the side bar and run First Aid.

Are you the only Registered User on the device? By that I mean does someone else have a Login of their own?

In addition to Rod's excellent advice, when using First Aid, there is a certain way to do it. See this;
