My partner has just upgraded to a brand new iMac from one which as about 9 years old.

it came with OS X 10.7 Lion, but then her printer didn't work ! a Lexmark combi and no drivers available.

No probs, I though, we have an external drive running OS X 10.2 that does support the printer.

I plugged it into the firewire port, expecting a chance to boot from that HD, and lo ! Zippo chance of booting although it can see the drive aok and access all its data.

Now THE QUESTION:-

is there any way to persuade the Lion OS to reboot from that HD ?

Any thoughts, very very very welcome !

It's very unlikely that a computer that came with Lion will boot to 10.2. If you cant get drivers for the printer you might try CUPS (CUPS), which is part of OS X. These are generic drivers for a large set of printers.

Wow ! You are up early !

Cups ! Gulp ! I'll try and see what happens !

on Linux I only got cups to work one in 10 times as it asked questions I didn't know the answer to ! *LOL*

but Hey, If I don't try I won't learn.

Many many thanks !

OS X.2 to OS X.7 is like chalk to cheese.

Best solution is to go out and buy a Lion compatible wireless printer such as an Epson or Bother for two suggestions. Lexmark are useless and still locked into the OS X.1/X.2 days as if they are current operating systems. All they do is update their web site saying drivers are compatible with later OS, but they have not worked since Panther.

My pleasure. It hurt putting my Lexmark All-in-One in the recycling bin but nothing else for it alas. Got an Epson TX550W and very happy with it and using Lion's Software Update, the printer and scanner drivers are updated automatically.
