OS X and Excel

I just downloaded OS X Yosemite and I am unable to open Excel. Exel documents will sometimes open in Preview but I am unable to enter data or modify an info.

Does it open in Numbers (if you happen to have that)? Is the extension .xslx or .xls visible on the files you are trying to open?
