Here's some data from my iMac, which was purchased new in September 2010:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac9,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08

Although not shown the hard drive is 1TB, with 671 GB free.

Two questions.

* What's the "highest" level of MAC OS I should go to in terms of what my computer can handle? I currently have 10.6.8

* Will any upgrade create problems with existing software? Of particular concern is Rosetta Stone Totale.

In advance, thanks

If you upgrade to an OS 4 versions newer than what is currently installed…you can almost be guaranteed that issues/problems will occur.

You can do two things:

1. Make a list of all your important apps…then check what the newest Mac OS version is compatible with each app (the current version that's installed)…then upgrade the OS no further than that OS version. This could be only 10.6.8, could be 10.7, could be 10.8.

2. You can upgrade your OS to 10.10…but then probably need to upgrade many or all of your important apps (which is going to cost a bunch of $$$).

To check app compatibility vs. OS version…head to this website:

And consider going to 8GB of memory first.
