I have set my inbox to the setting "newest message on top," however automatically resets to "oldest message on top." How can I prevent this from recurring?

You're not giving us much info to go on here.

Let me guess: You opened Mail Preferences - Viewing - and then put a check mark in the box at the bottom of that window. That box, if you go back to look, is only for "Conversations".

You want all of your mail - you need to look at the sorting options that is located right at the top of the list of your messages. Click that little "Sort by Date" and you'll find all sorts of options for sorting your mail.

Also, you may want to head into the "UserCP" link at the top of the forum, then "Edit your details", then scroll to the bottom and enter your Mac specs in the appropriate box, so folks will not be asking you what Mac, what version of OS X, etc, you have.
