Onyx for cleaning up my Mac Snowleaopard

As when downloading any app - Only download it direct from the developers site - here.
Your Mac, of course, accepts "downloads" from anywhere (if it is functioning properly).
Gatekeeper, when it is turned on and which is not part of Snow Leopard, prevents you from "installing" applications from unidentified developers.

Thank you for this extremely quick and thorough advice. I have downloaded Onyx for Snowleopard (correct spelling this time). It has instructed me simply to drag the icon to my Applications folder which I have done. I cannot open it by double clicking etc. to see what I have, so must presume it just gets on with the job - unless I have missed something here!

No, it does not just get on with it's job.
What happens when you double click the icon - the one you moved to the Applications folder?
Try holding the control key while clicking on it.

It might be worth remarking that Stimme needs to be sure he/she downloaded the version of OnyX specific to Snow Leopard.
This could account for its not opening.

Then you need to open the one that you put in the Applications folder - not that one.

You drag the icon in the window the windows that opens from that window to your Applications folder. Not the file you downloaded as that a DMG Disk Image.
Here is a screen shot. See Onyx in that open window? That is an ICON. Drag it out of that window that opens up and drag that ICON to the Applications folder.

Thank you, that was what I was doing wrong - 'wrong' icon chosen. I also had downloaded the snowleopard version which is the original on this Mac, but had not taken into account that I had recently updated to 10.9.5. This has now been accepted.
