My password has not changed. Onyx doesn't recognize it and won't quit.

Click on the  in the upper left corner, then click Force Quit and click on Onyx to kill it. Can't help with the PW.

What password? OnyX does not require a password. It requires a restart at the completion of the Maintenance Script (which it states at the beginning) and after restart usually quits itself. Are you using the correct version for your macOS? Its very important you use the specific version. Perhaps you could explain the process and what happened.

It has always asked for my login password to begin the maintenance and it has never quit itself and today it didn't recognize my password. I guess I may have the wrong version.

Ohhh! You are talking about the Admin Password for the computer. That's different.
Have a look here; https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html. these are the versions for each macOS. Check the version you have is correct, if not delete (Trash) the older version and instal the new one.
If you go to Home from the above site you get a fuller explanation.

Yes, your Admin password is always required before OnyX will even begin.

That shouldn't be a problem as I presume you use your Admin PW a lot - to unlock the Mac, perhaps, and for every update or installation of any app.

And Rod made a very relevant point - OnyX is Operating System specific. You may have downloaded the wrong version??

Actually I tried to launch the Catalina version of Onyx today on Big Sur and promptly received a notification that that version would not run on Big Sur. Hard to say if that was a system notification or the app but at least in Big Sur it's not possible to run the wrong version.

Actually, it does. It needs to run with Admin authority, so it asks for an Admin password when it starts up.

No, the System requires an admin password to launch the app. It's not a password required by the app but the macOS. I suppose I am guilty of making the assumption the OP would not have forgotten his admin password.
